چکیده

Suspensions of clays in organic liquids change considerably in theological character from liquid to liquid or when additions of a second liquid are made; thus, for example when about 15 per cent. volume of ethyl alcohol was added to a dispersion of a sample of bentonite in water the specific viscosity and thixotropy (as measured 9 by rate of the sol-->gel transition) increased to a maximum in spite of the-fact that alcohol itself yielded low viscosity suspensions. On the other hand, with a sample of kaolin in water the degree of dispersion appeared to be increased by small additions of ethyl alcohol but not by methyl or n-propyl alcohol. There appears to be a close correlation between viscosity changes and the tendency to flocculation and the fine changes with composition can be shown on property-composition curves. Sedimentation volumes and rates of sedimentation form useful data; when water partially replaced alcohol in a 5 grams/100 ccs. bentonite suspension in alcohol there was increased degree of dispersion as indicated by the following data :

Dispersion Properties of Nano YSZ Particles in Aqueous Suspensions

In the present research, the aqueous suspensions of nano-sized YSZ particles were prepared using a common and available dispersant (Dolapix CE64) at different pH values and their stability were evaluated through the sedimentation height, viscosity measurement, and microstructural observation. Different amounts of dispersant were tested and the optimum percentage was examined by measuring the vi...

Effect of bilayer flexibility and medium viscosity on separation of liposomes upon stagnation

Liposomes are widely used as drug delivery systems in different forms including osmotic pumps, infusion and IV injection. In spite of these, there is no data available about their behavior under convective flow (e.g. infusion or osmotic pumps) and upon stagnation in such drug delivery systems. As a part of a series of investigations in this area, the present study investigates the effects of vi...

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate and the plasma viscosity.

Certain factors are common to the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and the plasma viscosity. Thus fibrinogen increases the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (Gram, 1921 ; Greisheimer, Johnson, and Ryan, 1929) and Hardwicke, Ricketts, and Squire (1950) found that a direct logarithmic relation exists between the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and the plasma fibrinogen concentration. Also fibrinogen ex...

The Plasma Viscosity.

The viscosity of the plasma was studied briefly by Fahraeus in his original investigations (1921) into the blood sedimentation rate. In 1940 further studies were made by T'Ang and Wang, who concluded that it gave a more accurate picture of the activity of disease processes than the erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The plasma viscosity technique was independently developed by Whittington and his ...
